SMS Long Code vs. SMS Short Code
Dialog Health can facilitate the hosting of both SMS Long Codes and SMS Short Codes for our clientele. Keep reading to explore the distinctions between these two types of phone numbers and determine which option aligns better with your organizational needs.
What is an SMS Short Code
A Short Code is an assigned 5 or 6-digit number that sends A2P messaging, or application-to-person messaging, normally aimed at large audiences. xxx-xx or xxx-xxx
What is an SMS Long Code
A Long Code comprises a 10-digit number suitable for sending and receiving SMS, commonly employed for personal purposes on mobile devices. And when you're in the U.S., that 10-digit number kicks off with a 3-digit area code. xxx-xxx-xxxx
Pros and Cons of Hosting Short Code vs. Long Code
Short Code
Pros
- Efficient for SMS deliverability to large audiences
- Once a Short Code is approved, it's often accepted by all carriers
- Deliverability receipts are more reliable because they come directly from the mobile device
- Recognition and Credibility, anyone can register a 10DLC, but not everyone can register a short code
- Spam filtration, less likely to be caught up in spam
- Higher throughput allows you to reach more people faster which can be beneficial if you are sharing time-sensitive content
Cons
- Can be more expensive to host
- The vetting period can take up to 9-12 weeks before it can send/receive messages
- Registration process is more stringent than registering a 10DLC
Long Code
Pros
- Less Expensive to host
- The vetting period varies from 2-5 weeks before 10DLC can send/receive messages
- More effective for smaller audiences
Cons
- Some carriers can opt to limit or restrict SMS
- SMS throughput (# of SMS sent per minute or day), can be throttled by carriers
- Deliverability receipts are less reliable because they are provided by the carrier
Consider Switching to an SMS Short Code When...
By default, Dialog Health will help your team register a 10DLC for all SMS traffic. However, your team's messaging goals may be more successful when hosting a Short Code.
- You are messaging a high-volume audience
- When your messages are time-sensitive
- When you plan to purchase multiple consoles with Dialog Health
- If you want to establish brand recognition or build trust with your audience
- Minimalize carrier restrictions
What Will You Need to Provide to DH to Host a Short Code or Long Code?
Your implementation specialist will ensure that each milestone is met to successfully register your Short Code or Long Code. To help you host either number type, we will need the following:
- Your organization's W9
- A main point of contact from the organization
- A phone number and email address for your subscribers to contact if further assistance is required outside of messaging (i.e., a support line, or office phone).
Our support line is monitored Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm CST
